Education in Prison failing

Education within the prison system has always been a key tool in trying to make sure that those inside the prison do not reoffend, basic skills like reading and writing are essential if a prisoner is going to make something of their life when they are released.

Yet it would seem that the schemes that were supposed to teach these basic skills and in some cases other qualifications has failed, according to a committee of MP’s.

They found that out of all the prisoners who could benefit from getting help, only twenty per cent have actually got around to joining a course.

With almost forty per cent of the prison population being classed as having severe learning problems, which is a reading age of an eleven year old and around fifty per cent with no qualifications at all, there is a serious need for the right help, but for many different reasons this is not being put into practice.
