Some Ph.D.’s can take up to ten years to complete.
According to the Chronicle of Higher Education, whose recent study on American Ph.D completion rates, found that the time it is taking some students to complete their studies, varies according to the subject matter.
In some fields like engineering and the sciences they are completed on average in around six or seven years. But in subjects like the social sciences and humanities the length of time increases to eight or nine years before completion. And in some cases ten years is not that uncommon.
However there are no conclusions as to why this is, ten years does seem an awful long time to be studying, and yet against all expectations it is the public institutions that come out ahead of the privately funded intuitions for competition times.
